Q:

How many seed pads are in one seed pad bag?

A:

Each seed pad bag contains one seed pad and one cover. To fill Heimgart up completely, you need two seed pad bags.

Q:

How many seed pads are in a Heimgart seed pad set?

A:

A microgreens seed pad set comprises six Heimgart seed pads. The sets are either single-variety, for example 6 x garden cress, or available as a mixed set. The mixed set consists of one of each of the six varieties.

Q:

What varieties of microgreens are available with Heimgart?

A:

At the moment we offer six microgreens varieties: radish, garden cress, red cabbage, mustard, rocket lettuce and broccoli. But we are already planning to offer more varieties.

Q:

Is the white fluff between the microgreens mould?

A:

The white fluff between the sprouting plants is what is known as fibrous roots or root hairs. There is no reason to worry. It is just a sign that the sprouting process is in full swing.

Q:

Why must the seed pads be covered with the growing covers for the first few days?

A:

Our seeds sprout in the dark and must be protected from light early on, otherwise the sprouting process will not start.

Q:

Do I have to water the seed pads again?

A:

After inserting the seed pads initially you don’t have to worry about anything else, that first time you water them is plenty.

Q:

How do I dispose of the seed pads after harvesting?

A:

Simply add to your compost or throw in the organic waste bin.

Q:

Why do the seed pads no longer have a wick?

A:

In the last two years we have received occasional feedback that the microgreens do not grow well in some spots on the pad. Of course, we wanted to get to the bottom of this and have taken another look at our seedpads. In the process, we have naturally also taken a closer look at the wick.
The wick was bonded to the seed pad with 5 adhesive points using a natural binder. Since the seed pads are not made by machine but by hand (in non-profit workshops), it sometimes occurred that the adhesive dots turned out to be larger and more saturated than they should have been and occasionally this prevented the microgreens from germinating.

Q:

Why does growing work without a wick?

A:

Since the seed pads are a few millimeters thinner without a wick, they are able to absorb the ideal amount of water when the porcelain bowl is correctly filled. Within the first few days, the microgreens form fine roots that grow through the seed pad and dip into the water and so provide water for the plant throughout the entire growing season.

Q:

I forgot to put the wick into the water – why didn’t the microgreens grow, although it now works without a wick?

A:

With a wick, the seed pads are a few millimeters thicker, so the roots cannot grow through the seed pad fast enough to supply themselves with water. So, if you still have seedpads with a wick, please make sure that it is immersed in water. If the wick is not put into the water, it will automatically fold up in such a way that it forms a barrier between the seed pad and the water and the even watering of the seed is not guaranteed.

Q:

Why did the seed pads previously have a wick?

A:

Before we launched Heimgart on the market in 2017, we spent a very long time on product development. When we entered the market, we wanted to be 100% sure that our growing system would work and that everyone would be able to grow their own microgreens – without the additional watering of the seedlings. The wick has given us an additional assurance when we entered the market that the microgreens will be watered evenly and consistently.

Q:

Why did you change the packaging?

A:

Heimgart is a sustainably designed growing system for microgreens. We have consciously decided in favour of high-quality materials and against the use of plastics. The Seltmann Weiden porcelain bowl and the stainless-steel insert are reusable and the seed pads can be composted after use or disposed of in organic waste.
With the adaptation of the packaging material we wanted to go one step further with sustainability and avoiding unnecessary packaging material (as much as possible). Therefore, the starter kit is now only sealed with labels, not with a packaging sleeve as before.
The seedpad packets and labels, as well as the cardboard box of the starter kit are now made from recycled paper, not uncoated paper as was previously the case. All wood-free papers that are not refined by applying coatings after the manufacturing process are referred to as uncoated paper. Recycled paper consists of 100% recycled waste paper. In addition to conserving wood reserves, there is a reduction of 70% energy and water consumption compared to conventional paper production. In short: Recycled paper is considerably more beneficial for the environment!
